Getting back to Video Games

It’s been awhile since I went out and bought a new video game so last week I went over to Gamestop after work and picked up used copies of Metal Gear Solid 3 and Quake 4 (for the PC). I played Metal Gear for a few nights and couldn’t get much into it. I didn’t know much about this new version but it takes place during the cold war. They start the game in a jungle, so you’re forced to survive with a knife and some crummy guns – not nearly as cool as the espionage angle they took in the previous 2 games. I haven’t gotten very far in it yet so maybe that all changes. Then I loaded up Quake 4. It struggled to run on my ATI card so I decided to go splurge for a new video card. Newegg provided me with a Gigabyte Geforce 7600GS which turned out to be a great card. I wanted something that was fanless since it would be going in my Media Center in the living room and this card seemed to be the most powerful I could get without requiring a big fan/heatsink. I also figured it would be a good investment with Vista and all it’s eye-candy that would be coming out soon. Quake 4 looks awesome now. I can run it at 720p on my TV with all the settings turned up. I vaguely remember the intro scene from Dave’s Xbox 360 and it looks even better in the PC version. The gameplay is pretty good, similar to Doom 3, but not so terribly complicated that you get lost exploring the levels. Speaking of which, I should try Doom 3 on the new card. I would probably cry from getting too scared with the surround sound and giant TV.After I get through Quake 4 and decide if I want to keep playing Metal Gear I was thinking about picking up a new PC game. Any suggestions? Paal? Dave? I’ve heard Far Cry is fun and looks amazing. There was the PS2 game that Dave talked about where you fight giants. I might pick up a Wii with Dave during our Chicago meetup if it’s available too.

  1. That’s awesome; I think a good PC is still very very capable of putting out better looking games than a 360 or PS3. Even if the 360 had been the top of the line when it came out (it wasn’t), it’s over a year old now.

I’m not all the familiar with PC games these days, but here’s what I’d suggest:

    -Half Life 2
    -Battle For Middle Earth 2
    -Civilization 4
    -Spore (when it comes out)
