I’ve seen a couple of stories about the new features Facebook rolled out this week and how creeped out some people are of it. Based on the title of this post, you can guess that I don’t feel the same way. I was weirded out by MySpace (still am) and to a lesser extent Facebook when I first started using them. It took awhile for me to warm up on Facebook and I’m still not addicted to it like some, but it’s a great way to stay in touch with friends. And that goes for all my friends, especially the ones that I don’t know well enough to email or call. That is the real power of Facebook for me. If these people that I don’t know well anymore don’t want me to know this, than they don’t have to accept my friend request.
The Good
I have nothing to hide and will gladly accept most friend requests if I know the person. The news feed is a good way to stay up on what all of those friends are doing without wasting hours going through their profiles. It shows that Facebook is paying attention to how their users are participating in their program and responding appropriately. Anything that makes things more efficient and saves me time is a great thing.
The Bad
The flip side of the argument is the supposed loss of privacy. Facebook has always given users the ability to limit how much information you share, if you don’t like the new features than turn them off. Just because you want to waste hours on Facebook not using these features doesn’t mean everyone else has to suffer. Other people have a life outside of Facebook. Thank you Facebook for some great new features, I’ll even randomly click on some adds this week to help ya out.
Josef, I disagree with your positivity about the new facebook “news” feed. It’s ridiculous. Who the hell cares if someone I talked to three times in high school doesn’t consider “Rounders” a favorite movie anymore? At least 90% of the feed is a horrible waste of space. If sifting through this crap increases your efficiency, then you are a clodhopper.
I do agree, however, that this in no way violates privacy. Anyone receiving your “news” on their “news” feed could find that information anyway. People who are freaking about that are clowns.
I still maintain that the feature is horrendous. There’s no need for that much detail.
