Firefox Extensions

Thought I would write a post on what Firefox extensions I’ve found useful.

  • Google Suggest – this is really basic but it changes your Google search bar in the upper right so that it does searches as you type. The results then come in to auto complete what you are typing. It helps avoid typo’s and searches that won’t have many results.
  • BlogThis - I use this when I’m visiting other sites and want to blog about it. It’s mainly just a quick way to bring up a new post window without visiting blogger.com
  • CustomizeGoogle – Genious. You don’t really notice that you are using this but if you take it off you’ll realize you are addicted. This hides all the ads in Gmail and Google searches. It also adds links to the other search engines in your Google results which I am yet to use but the removal of ads makes this extension worth it alone.
  • AdBlock – Same kind of thing as CustomizeGoogle. You simply rich click on an image or iframe and it prompts you with the URL which you can customize with wildcards and then save for future blocking. It works really well on news sites.
  • foXpose – I just started using this one. It gives you a button in the status bar that when you click will tile all your open tabs in one window (ala Max OS expose).
  • SessionSaver – I read about this one on Wired. This should really be a default option within Firefox. It simply saves the last site your browser was on when you closed the window. It will even save all the open tabs you have and reopen them when you start using Firefox again.
  • del.icio.us – I kept hearing about social bookmarking but now I’m hooked. This extension makes delicious bookmarks work like Firefox ones by putting a button up by your browser controls.
  • Google PageRank Status – Simply puts the GoogleRank in the lower right of your status bar.

If anyone has some other useful extensions I’d love to hear what you’re using.

  1. But Joe, if you take the ads out of Google, how will you see my handy work??

The Urban Dead extensions worked great until the new version of FF came out – they’re not updated yet (so far as I know…)

  2. Did you see this article about exploiting Google? I don’t mind the ads on Google for searching but the email kind of creeps me out. Makes me feel like big brother is reading it to figure out what I want advertised to me.
